2017 Leaderboards Completed – Cheers to the winners

Happy New Year everyone, we hope it was a good and profitable year.

Our 2017 Leaderboards are now closed and this year we have all new names atop the 4 main leader boards!

For profit and after all that’s the bottom line, the big moneyin the top 4 places all had over 1 million in winnings. In first was Svzff at 1.78 million followed by Epiphany77 at 1.23 million then came Sordykrd 1.18 and our last millionaire was Joshuah333 with 1.13

Then we see that there are great players all over the world. Represented are Estonia, Ukraine, Malta and Mexico. Noqqx led the wat with a total of $315,967 followed by Sauron 1 at $253,181 then Zimiso7 at $229,162 and in 4th place was at $144,451

In the count catagory, we are only listing the first place in this post. Slayerv1fan played 202,004. Where does he get the time? He might need a new mouse a month!!

The best 500 streak average profit belongs to a WPN player named V2the3 who averaged a very respectful $153. The 100 count category was led by  Stevie444 from Mexico at $616.96

One of my favorite categories is Single Table Wins in a row. Who wouldn’t love to win 10 in a row? Ajax109 accomplished just that.

Want to see your favorite category? Head on over to the Sharkscope Leaderboard page and check it out. Some of the accomplishments are amazing!

What fraction of online poker players are winners? (Part 2)

Its been a few years since we posted a highly popular article dispelling the myths on what fraction of online poker players win money over the long term, so we figured it was time to give out some updated statistics.

The general gist of that article is that for a number of reasons the amount of winning players is far higher than people expect. However within that there is a huge variation between different networks. Some of it is caused by regulatory factors, such as high taxation on the operators forcing higher rake jurisdictions, some is caused by some networks heavily investing in freerolls and guaranteed tournaments which will boost players tournament profitability, possible at the expense of other types of promotions, and some of the causes are simply unknown. Whatever the reason though the data is still quite interesting to try and interpret.

One of the limitations of our data, other than it only including tournaments, is that we only include players with at least 100 games played. For the larger networks we’ve found that this limit has little effect on the fractional results, but it does tend to boost the smaller network probability as you have to be dedicated on these network to even find 100 tournaments to play.

The other thing to remember is that these numbers do not exclude any external promotions such as rakeback or deposit bonuses.

So the headline figure is that 22% of online tournament players are profitable which is down from the 26% we saw in 2009.

Here’s the data by network:

Network % Profitable Players
iPoker.es 70%
PartyPoker.es 51%
Dollaro 43%
iPoker.fr 37%
PKR 35%
Revolution 31%
Merge 29%
PartyPoker.fr 29%
PokerStars.es 28%
IPN 27%
PartyPoker 27%
SkyPoker 27%
Ongame.fr 26%
MicroGaming 26%
SvenskaSpel 25%
Winamax.fr 25%
Gioco Online Italia 23%
Ongame 23%
iPoker 23%
FullTilt 22%
PartyPoker.it 22%
PokerStars 21%
PokerStars.fr 20%
MicroGame 18%
PokerClub 17%
PokerStars.it 15%
Ongame.it 14%
iPoker.it 13%

The top 2 networks iPoker.es and PartyPoker.es are clearly effected by the 100 game small network bias, although generally the Spanish markets fair well overall. This is possible due to it being the newest major regulated market so the different sites are still competing hard with aggressive promotions to win early market share. Other than that most of the trends remain consistent to the data seen in 2009. Italy is still bad place to play winning poker and it appears the unregulated sites such as Merge and Dollaro are able to funnel their lower tax burden back into their players profits through lower rake and better promotions (though remember withdrawing from the unregulated sites is always a gauntlet).

SharkScope announces Leaderboard Winners!!

Well, it’s that time of the year, closing out the last minute details and thinking about next year’s resolutions. Was your resolution last year to be on top of the SharkScope leaderboards? Time has flown by this year, slower for some and faster for other but for those atop the leaderboards the number 13 couldn’t have been any luckier!

There are so many categories and so little time, so we’ll focus on the main categories that you all see when first arriving on the Leaderboard page.  That’s not to say that many of the other categories aren’t significant and in fact important, especially if you’re on top of one of those but we can only write about just so much.

If we’re going to start anywhere it has to be with “SkaiWalkurrr” playing on PokerStars who represents the Netherlands. Talk about go wire to wire and wining by a mile or any other cliché you can come up with! This player was heads above the rest in SNGs for 2013. In fact the number 2 player Jorj95 is about 300,000 behind. However this isn’t the whole story.

Back in August I interviewed the leader at that time “mrGR33N13” because at that time he was over 1 million in winnings. Since then he’s chosen to block his stats and we don’t know how he ended up. I will tell you though that in that interview he told me that “Taking everything into account, I believe I’m the best in the world at them”(meaning SNGs). It would be interesting to see a heads up battle between these two players.

Now when you win the Main event of the WSOP you’re a World Champion forever. Looking back since the year 2000 it can be said that many ME players haven’t stood the test of time. This is where our category of “COUNT” comes into play, because when you are playing every day for many hours and are a consistent winner you’ve stood the test of time. Our congratulations go out to “v4b=yp” playing on PokerStars  also representing the Netherlands. Well over 250,000 games played. He is followed closely by “Brezi26” representing the Czech Republic but after that the count drops off by 100,000. That’s huge (no pun intended)

Streaks aren’t an anomaly, they occur! Maybe it’s a confidence that comes with winning the previous game, maybe it’s ego, I’m not sure but the leaderboards show that it’s fact not fiction and heading the list of Best 100 Streak Avg. Profit is “zangbezan23” with an Avg profit of a whopping $1419 representing Canada. That’s 500 above 2nd place.

Stretching it out to Best 500 once again is “SkaiWalkurrr” with an Avg Profit of $462 which once again crushes number 2 by 200.

We want to thank and congratulate all the leaders from all the categories and for opting in so that we may share and enjoy your results with others.

So where will you be in 2014? Will the return of poker to the US challenge the leaderboards once again?

Here’s to wishing you a very Happy Healthy and Prosperous New Year and to hoping that next year I’ll be writing about you

Cheers

What fraction of online poker players are winners?

One of the common – and more amusing – threads I see on many of the internet forums is discussions about what fraction of online tournament players are profitable. One of the most frequent guesses i see is 5%. Often someone will then post that SharkScope has in its FAQ that 1/3rd of usernames are winners. The person will who suggested 5% will then immediately claim our numbers must be wrong.

Why they think we would get this wrong I have no idea – but for psychological reasons players seem to want to believe the number of winners is small. The losers want to feel more justified in showing that they haven’t won any money because its extremely hard to do so, and presumably the winning players want to feel that their accomplishment is even more special.

So what are the exact numbers? Based on our entire database 26% of players are winners. If you exclude rake, then the number is more like 33% of players are making money against other players.

The fraction is also surprisingly constant for the different tournament variants, for example if you filter for just heads up games, the percentage of profitable players is still exactly 26%.

The number varies somewhat by network, but not as much as you might think. For example take a look at the table below which is the fraction of winners for all players who have played at least 100 games:

Network % Profitable Players
Merge 44%
Cereus 39%
B2B 33%
Cake 32%
Party 32%
Ongame.it 31%
Everest 31%
Sky 31%
PKR 30%
PokerStars.it 29%
IPN 28%
SvenskaSpel 27%
PokerStars 27%
Pacific 27%
PokerClub 26%
Betfair 25%
Ongame 25%
FullTilt 25%
iPoker 24%
CryptoLogic 23%
Peoples 22%
iPoker.it 20%
GiocoDigitale 17%

You can see that most networks are grouped around the 30% mark. There are some tracking artifacts that effect some networks numbers, for example if a site does a lot of guaranteed tournaments with overlays or freeroll tournaments then this will directly boost the number of winners. The clearest case in point is the Merge network, which manages to have a huge 44% of players making a profit presumably due to all the money they are pumping back into the network in the form of their $50k Guaranteed tournament that often has a 3x overlay.

For some networks, such as Everest, we don’t yet tracked scheduled tournaments and so the results don’t get a boost from these types of bonus tournaments, if there are any.

Another factor effecting the winning percentage is obviously rake. We’d expect most of the Italian networks to be at the bottom of this list as they tend to charge significantly more rake than their global counterparts. Its still hard to understand why GiocoDigitale has such a small fraction of winners compared to other sites though. We can probably speculate about that until the cows come home…..

2015 Leaderboard Highlights

Happy New Year everyone, we hope it was a good and profitable year.

Our 2015 Leaderboards are now closed and this year we have all new names atop the 4 main leader boards!

Furkay (Russia) took top honors in the all important SNG profit category, topping out at just under 170 thousand dollars. Furkay crushed it by besting the second place finisher Jorj95 (Canada) by $20,000.

How do you beat someone who lives on the computer playing poker for hours on end and multi-tabling to boot? Simple all you have to do is be Leshiy588 from Belarus. He played 228,678 SNGs. In order to do that you play in your house, on the road, on a bus and at the beach! FXCO (Slovakia) just couldn’t keep up logging only 146,554 SNGs. That’s over 80,000 more games!

Last year in Stevie444 and Skaiwalkurrr were all over the leaderboards, but both could only reach 6th and 5th respectively as the overall leader in Best 100 Streak Average Profit went to NikolasDLP  from Russia earning just under 1 Million Dollars. Wow that’s a lot of caviar!

Moving on up to Best 500 Streak Avg. Profit, while all the above winners were on the list, the Top Honors went to, Smokrokflock from  Canada with an average of $234.67

All of the above tournaments are on our main leaderboard page and all were achieved on PokerStars.

If there was one trend that we saw it was hoe Spin N Go’s effected the over all leader boards.

Total winnings and counts were down across the board as Sp N Go’s and Jackpot SNGs became more prevelant, taking many players away from Regular SNGs and MTTs.

Any Game by Country turned out to be a big hit and the list of countries represented is 52 and growing!

Last but certainly not least is Citoject from Bulgaria  won over 1 million in scheduled tournaments. That total is down by $500.000, but I’ll take a million anytime!

All in all 2015 was a great year for SharkScope and Online Poker. We want to thank all of you who participated and most of all we really appreciate your posts, chats and emails referring SharkScope to your friends! Don’t forget to like our Facebook page

Is Online Poker Going Away?

Is Online Poker going away? That’s the question I get asked more and more as I travel to brick & Mortar casinos. My answer is no. However I think the landscape has changed drastically and forever. Prohibition, we all learned about it in school and some of us even heard the term when we were kids. During this time no one stopped drinking alcohol, and this time there’s a marked difference! PLAYING POKER ISN’T ILLEGAL. That’s right, the law enacted last year or should I say slipped into the Safe Harbor Act doesn’t mention playing poker at all. It’s solely based on how banking deals with online gaming, or better put how banking CAN NOT deal with online gaming. So what does this mean and how do you go on playing without interruption or roadblocks. You don’t! The roadblocks are challenging but not a hurdle too high to jump. More the online poker sites you know and trust, are helping you make the jump. Some of the procedures you initially went thru to fund your online accounts will have to be repeated and there might be some minor delays before you can deposit or withdraw Places like Neteller (online bank based outside the US) have stopped transactions with gaming sites and others have stopped taking US customers at all. Most of these are publicly traded somewhere in the world and the shareholders didn’t want the exposure of going against a US law. However, for everyone that closed there’s another to take its place and they’re eager for your business.

I’m not saying you should just google search the tern “online banking’ you shouldn’t because unfortunately there will be many “fly by night” banking sites that will pop up that may not be as reputable as you’d want. So how do you choose, well you don’t. Your favorite online poker site is doing the work on your behalf and since their reputation is at stake, I feel confident that they’re doing their due diligence. Simply put if their research has found the company to be reputable so should you. In the meantime it seems as though B & M tournaments are growing and so are the long lines and lists at the land based poker casinos.

That’s good because you’re going to make new friends. This not only helps you social life but it will help your online poker funding as well. Many of the site have enhanced their player to player transfers and the more players you meet the more you’ll have to trade funds with. I’ve already seen players in casinos with their laptops trading funds, not only quick and easy but also with no fees Somewhere in the crystal ball is a government that sees the revenue they’ve turned away and legislators will see the light instead of sneaking under cover of night. This means US backed online poker; which isn’t completely a good thing, but I’d rather be taxed and be safe than not play at all. Not only will the US get a chance to tax the online companies, estimated at 3.3 Billion, but they could get access to online poker winners and tax them as well. In return you get a safe environment and a company with offices here in the US, which means better customer service and an authority to answer to if you have problems. So the answer again is no online poker isn’t going away, in fact I believe it’s here to stay in one form or another and while you might find the road bumpy it’s still a road I’d travel on everyday Warren “PokerMD” Karp www.PokerMD.com

Luck Be a Lady . All Right!

When I was very young and going to the Catskills for the summers, one of my favorite things other than softball, swimming, camp, and Monticello Raceway was looking forward to those great weekends when my father came up and I got to sit behind him in the big poker game. Of course, poker wasn’t legal in New York in those days; in fact, it wasn’t legal when I was of age, but we played anyway. All the guys would circle the table looking for their usual seats, and it would turn into one of those great men get-togethers – you know, no women allowed. Of course, there was the usual wife walk-through: “Hi, honey, how ya doin’?” I kept thinking to myself that only men played the game. With all the off-color remarks and the bold play, a woman would become intimidated. Besides, in those days, the men were the breadwinners in the house.
